Conservative Management of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) for the General Practitioner Dentist

Outline: A vast majority of the TMD consultations seen at OMFS offices are in patients who have not had the full gamut of conservative treatment. This lecture aims to provide a systematic approach for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients presenting with TMD. This should improve efficiency at your office, as well as reduce unnecessary consultation costs for patients who may not require surgery.

Dr. Kevin Vint is a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon who works privately at Maxillo Winnipeg and holds hospital privileges at Health Sciences Centre and Victoria General Hospital. He has lectured across Canada, and teaches at both a graduate and undergraduate level.

“Systematic Endodontic Diagnostic Protocol”

A complete endodontic diagnosis must include both a pulpal and a periapical diagnosis for each tooth evaluated before endodontic treatment can be rendered. It is much like going on a reconnaissance mission, gathering as much information as possible and not relying on a single isolated piece of this information before endodontic treatment is provided. This presentation will take the participant on a diagnostic journey to be able to systematically and logically come to a proper decision on whether the patient’s symptoms are odontogenic in origin or coming from another source. In addition, the most common endodontic emergencies will be discussed and how best to treat them.

Learning Objectives

- To predictably carry out pulpal and periapical tests in a logical and efficient sequence

- To make a pulp and periapical diagnosis according to the American Association of Endodontists classification

- To discuss non odontogenic etiologies for facial pain

- To be able to treat the most common endodontic emergencies
